About Me

About Me

Hi, I’m Joe a Private Pilot currently living in Kent, UK.

I have had a passion for aviation since I was a child, first getting the buzz on a family holiday flight and getting invited to visit the Captain, sitting in the flight deck and getting the feel of the controls of a British Caledonean DC-10 (back before cockpit doors were kept locked).

Since then, I have had a keen interest in commercial aviation and airliners. Particularly the technical aspects, understanding how these massive machines work and manage to power through the sky. Over the years I’ve been fortunate that my job in the Software industry has taken me all over the world travelling on many kinds of aircraft.

Around 20 years after that flight on the DC-10, the buzz and excitement of flying in light aircraft (Cessna 208B Caravan and Cessna 206) on domestic flights while on Honeymoon in Tanzania and Zanzibar gave me the big push that I needed to dedicate my time to the slog of the written exams and practical tests required to obtain my Private Pilots Licence.

My first flying lesson

My first flying lesson was a birthday present from my Wife, in a Cessna 172 at Alouette Flying Club based at Biggin Hill in Kent. The exhilaration of being in control of the aircraft was enough for me to confirm that I definitely wanted to continue the journey towards that coveted pilots licence.

After around 18 months of training, completing 7 written exams and the radiotelephony practical exam, I passed my PPL(A) EASA skills test in August 2014 in the same Cessna 172 (G-BRAK) that I took my very first lesson in. It certainly wasn’t an easy task but is (apart from my children, obviously!) my proudest achievement to date. The freedom of solo flying an aircraft and seeing the pride and awe on the faces of my friends and family make every second of hard graft worthwhile.

I have also been lucky enough to try my hand at flying Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A380-800 fixed base simulators which was a great experience and believe has helped me to become a better pilot.

Following the uncertainty around the future of General Aviation at Biggin Hill, I am now a member at Weald Air Services based at Headcorn in Kent flying in their fleet of Cessna 152, 172 and Piper PA28 aircraft. I try to fly a regularly as I can to take full  advantage of the privileges that the PPL offers.

Originally I started recording my flights with a single GoPro 3 and a Sony voice recorder as a method to help me in my training. This allowed me to look back on my flights and my RT to help me become a better pilot. While this is still one of the uses for my videos, I now like to document my flights into a diary and if they can help anyone else training for their PPL, it’s an added bonus.

I hope you enjoy the videos and content on my YouTube channel.
