Sightseeing around the north Kent coast

I had the date Sunday 3rd September booked in the diary to go flying for quite a while. My parents and I had wanted to visit the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and I had been plotting the route and sorting out plans a good few weeks before.

In the week prior to the flight the weather had been good and the forecast had looked promising. Even the day before was glorious flying weather, but with other plans, I was stuck to flying on the Sunday.

The forecast on the day was reasonable, but with heavy rain, strong wind and low thick cloud scheduled to arrive late afternoon I started to get concerned that I would make it up to Duxford but would be stuck there and unable to get back to Biggin Hill.

The decision was made for us as I was doing the pre-flight checks with dark and heavy clouds visible to the west, we made the decision to make the trip to Duxford another day and head out to where the weather was a bit better in the south east.

We wanted to visit an area that was familiar to all of us from the ground but have rarely seen from the air. With my parents and I living in Kent, we decided to do a bit of sightseeing around the north Kent coast and even managed a few orbits over my house. Unfortunately my wife didn’t notice that there was a plane circling overhead.

North Kent coast route

We departed from runway 21 at Biggin Hill, making a left turn after 2 miles to avoid Biggin Hill village and keeping in line with noise abatement regulations. On reaching Sevenoaks we changed to Southend Radar on the radio who were incredibly busy, so much so that I couldn’t even pass my first message for another 15 miles when we were on the outskirts of Maidstone.

In the end, we got a Basic Service from Southend and we continued on towards Sittingbourne and Faversham where the north Kent coast was clear and in front of us. We had some great views of the Isle of Sheppy and then tracked out to sea with the coastline in sight. With the wind farms at sea on our left hand side, we took in the sights of Whitstable harbour, Herne Bay and Reculver before heading back in land passing over the threshold of the runway at Manston which is unfortunately no longer in use.

As we reached the outskirts of Sevenoaks, we changed back to Biggin Approach for our rejoin instructions just as the rain was starting. We were given the usual instructions to join from the dead side and to report at 3 miles for onward clearance. Our approach to runway 21 was delayed as is quite common at Biggin Hill due to jet aircraft inbound on the ILS who take priority. 3 orbits at the end of the downwind leg later, we were allowed to proceed.

Sightseeing around the north Kent coast

Although it was disappointing not to make it to Duxford we still managed a really enjoyable flight and I can now add another 1 hour 45 minutes brakes off to brakes on in my log book.
