VFR flight back to Biggin Hill from Oxford

As I was in command of the inbound flight to Oxford it was Graham’s turn to fly us back to Biggin Hill. I seem to have timed our arrival perfectly, parking on the grass area after a couple of circuits, the weather closed in and the heavens opened as we closed down and secured the aircraft. We had to briefly take shelter under the wings of the Cessna 172 allowing the worst of the rain to pass before we could make our way to the Flight Operations department to pay the landing fees.

We visited the on-site cafe for some lunch while the weather passed and then took a leisurely stroll back to the aircraft stopping to take some photos along the way.

With our departure slot booked the pre-flight checks complete and the engine started, we taxied to the other side of the airfield to depart from runway 19. Our initial clearance was a left turn to the south east out not above altitude 2,000 feet until further notice. After passing over the Oxford area we were handed over to Oxford Radar who removed our altitude restrictions.

We took a different route back to Biggin, this time flying north over the Heathrow/London CTR. This meant that there were no MATZ penetrations and a great view of London city, even if it was an ever so slightly longer journey.

On reaching the High Wycombe area, we changed to Farnborough LARS North, and stayed with them until approaching the Dartford Crossing where we contacted Biggin Approach for our join and landing instructions.

It was a standard dead side join at Biggin, reporting at 3 miles where we were given onward clearance to join.

The weather was definitely better in the London area, after a slightly bumpy start to the flight, it ended up nice and smooth and pleasant as we landed back at Biggin.

It was really nice on the return journey to actually have the time to look out of the window, take some videos and photos which I can’t do when I am pilot in command. A great day out and pleased to have added Oxford Kidlington to my list of visited airfields. I will most definitely be back in the future.
