A trip to Headcorn to meet my family
Sunday 9th April 2017 was a glorious sunny day and was ideal for a trip in the PA28 that I had been wanting to do for some time.
With myself and my family living close to Headcorn (a grass airfield between Maidstone and Ashford in Kent, known for it’s parachuting activities), I took a short flight from Biggin Hill to meet my Wife, daughter and parents who were there waiting to watch me land.
I departed solo from a busy Biggin Hill on runway 21 in the incredibly warm PA28 (inside temperature reached 35ºc). I took the usual route for VFR departures to the South East via Sevenoaks where I switched straight to Headcorn Radio.
I positioned for a straight in approach for runway 10 at Headcorn, but with the haze generated by the heat the visibility was poor and I didn’t actually get the runway in sight until I was 5 miles from the airfield. I was preparing for the possibility of a go around just incase I didn’t get the runway in sight until it was too late.
Although Headcorn was busy, with the help of another aircraft giving me space to join, the approach was relatively simple until about 50 feet from the ground when the thermals made the landing slightly more difficult than normal.
I then made a school boy error after parking the aircraft. I left my Go-Pro that films out of the side window directly in the sun which then overheated. Although it did record footage of the return flight there was quite a lot of noise and interference.
After a quick lunch and watching some sky diving at Headcorn, I flew my parents back to Biggin Hill. My Wife and daughter stayed at Headcorn to watch me take off before they returned home.

For the return flight, I departed to the East from runway 10, making a couple of left turns passing Leeds Castle and Maidstone to put me back on course towards Biggin Hill.
We were delayed in our arrival back to Biggin Hill due to an aircraft in front who was having some radio issues. We had to enter a hold a 7 miles, 5 miles then 3 miles from the airfield before getting clearance to join from the dead side for runway 21.
Although it was only a short hop from Biggin Hill to Headcorn, it was great to be able to take a trip and have your family there waiting for you at the other end.
